Sadly we have had to postpone the planned charity cycle ride to DE TROFFEL Lodge in Hengelo. Hopefully this will be reinstated at a more convenient date in the near future - before the cold sets in. The timing was perhaps slightly out this time as most brethren have either holidays or other Lodge commitment that fall on the same day, thus we only had below the minimum number, attending the event..... its a long way to cycle on your own!! However all is not lost as any budding Tour De France hopeful will be more than welcome to take part when it finally happens - as ever its for a good cause. Watch this space for the new date.

GL Annual Communication on 3/4 May 2013 in Bad Rothenfelde

Categories // Lodge News

My mother always said to me "Bad things first, good things later!"

GL Annual Communication on 3/4 May 2013 in Bad Rothenfelde

In Bad Rothenfelde, the bad one was that our meeting didn't take place in "our" well known Bad Iburg but in Bad Rothenfelde. The hotel was not as comfortable as we know it from the Hotel Zum Freden but the town of Bad Rothenfelde was really worth to visit. Have you seen the old fashioned salt production system which is quite interesting, just in the middle of the town? The other bad thing of this GL Annual Communication was that many Brethren have really missed a wonderful weekend!

Call for Papers: 4th European Conference on Masonic Studies (ECMS)

Categories // Lodge News

Manchester 12th - 14th September 2014: ‘Alle Menschen werden Brueder?’ Freemasonry and the European Community in Stress, 1780-1830

Deadline: 31 October 2013

The 4th European Conference on Masonic Studies (ECMS), a cooperation of research lodges in Europe will take place in Manchester from 12th to 14th September 2014. Earlier ECMS conferences took place in Vienna (2008), Perugia (2010, and Bayreuth (2012). The ECMS conferences are supported by several European Grand Lodges and research lodges, but they are completely independent from any masonic organisation and are open for all researchers, whether they are freemasons or not.

The focus of the Manchester conference addresses the crucial period of transition throughout Europe resulting from the French Revolution, the expansion and fall of the Napoleonic empire, war inflation and the beginnings of industrialisation. It has been termed the ‘sattelzeit’, the saddle-period (Reinhart Koselleck). In many places it witnessed the change from an ‘ancien régime’ to that of the nation-state, from a society of ‘estates’ to a class structure, and to a fresh political consciousness. It saw a re-definition of the relation of church and state, with often a certain loss of control of public life hitherto exercised by the Church. Hence cultural life experienced fundamental changes.

And of course the international state system was reshaped several times. The phrase ‘the European community in stress’ emphasises the accelerated transformations of European societies and of their relationships one to another. In this period freemasonry changed as well: its social structure, its role and impact in the community, its relation to religion, together with its rituals—all underwent fundamental revisions. Due to an increasingly nationalist character, international masonic networks— the transnational relations of Grand Lodges and lodges – on the one hand became more limited, while on the other hand freemasonry has been claimed to be an important element in the emergent globalisation and colonisation of the world by the major European powers, namely the British and the French.

Papers dealing with the changes reflected by freemasonry during this period 1780-1830 are warmly invited. In particular, papers addressing international aspects, or comparing the developments in different parts of Europe, will be especially welcomed. Papers should be in English. The conference will strictly adhere to academic standards. Thus double peer-review will be applied anonymously to all proposals presented to the scientific committee of the conference, the members of which will include Martin Papenheim (Germany), Pierre-Yves Beaurepaire (France), Andreas Oennerfors (Sweden), Jeffrey Tyssens (Belgium) and Jan Snoek (Netherlands).

Proposals in English should be no longer than about 500 words and sent as a DOC-file to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. before 31 October 2013.

Johannisfest and Installation at LogeZum Goldene Rade 219.

Categories // Lodge News

On Saturday 29 June, the  WM Doric Lodge 886, accompanied by 7 Doric brethren, attended the Installation meeting of our host Lodge Zum Goldene Rade 219 in the Lodge rooms in Osnabruck. This event was made that bit extra special by it not only being the re-Installation of Bro Ludger Steinkamp, but also consisted of a ceremony of joining for Bro Aart from Zwolle, Holland and an Initiation of Bro Mathias from Osnabruck. The master and officers certainly had their work cut out. However to add an extra twist the sister Lodge of Muffelmann zur Treue from Munster also held their re-Installation at the same time. So at times cohosted by two serving Masters, things clearly could have gone awry. NOT IN THE SLIGHTEST. The whole ceremony from start to finish was conducted in the finest manner and tradition and was a sight to behold. All the floor work was verging on impeccable and I cant think of a more pleasant place to have been than there for those few hours. (in lodge terms I mean), clearly a beach in Mallorca would be nice too. From the harmony, friendship, through to the Opera singer and pianist singing and playing the classics, everything was just perfect. We had the wonderful festive that was served by their stewards and a couple of the brothers wives. Wine flowed freely and not only for the top table. I was honoured by sitting on that top table and also asked to make a speech. Compliments were exhanged as were gifts and visiting cards. Many new friends were made, there were no barriers, personnal or language between the 60 German Dutch and British freemasons present. I can only recommend in the strongest way what a great experience it is to attend and witness a German ceremony and to be amongst so many like minded brothers irrelevant of Nationality.

Kind Regards to you all and to all those Brethren that were there.

Lodge Niederrhein - Ladies Night on Saturday 6 April 2013 in Holiday Inn Hotel, Ratingen

Categories // Lodge News

First the essence: Any one who couldn’t attend to this evening has missed a wonderful and most enjoyable evening.

Lodge Niederrhein - Ladies Night on Saturday 6 April 2013 in Holiday Inn Hotel, Ratingen

Yes, there were some worries whether the party will be a success or not.
Too few responses? Too expensive? Too repetitive? Too formal?
Nothing like!

The evening started punctually with a Champagne reception and all the attendees have been punctual.
Three big round tables were beautiful decorated and in front of each Lady, a wrapped gift. Surprise! Later!

To go or not to go - that was the question

To go or not to go - that was the question

It was hardly a ‘Midsummer Nights Dream’ - more ‘A Winters Tale’ - when, on a snowy day in Manchester with plenty more ‘frozen precipitation’ set to fall from the skies, to go or not to go was the question being asked before departure. However, deciding to brave the elements, five West Lancashire Masons headed off south to Shakespeare’s birthplace town of Stratford-upon-Avon to visit the Swan of Avon Lodge 2133.

  • souther Star Lodge 1025, Munich - Winter Social

SSL celebrated the start of the Christmas period with their annual ‘Winter Social’ at the “Delhi Palace” Indian restaurant where the Festive Board is held after our Lodge meetings. A superb buffet of the finest Indian cuisine was laid on and everyone congratulated the staff for providing such a sumptuous feast (extra chilli sauce was provided for those who like their Indian food really ‘spicy hot’!).

In total 30 guests attended (comprising 14 Members, 12 ladies and 6 ‘Not-Yet Masons’.

Of the ‘Not-Yet Masons’, one brought his completed Application For Initiation form with him, and three others before they left the party asked to have the form - what a result!!!

To round the evening off a raffle was held, followed by an auction of some particularly  desirable items and together the superb sum of €427 was raised for charity.

The next ‘social’ event will be our Master’s Farewell Dinner on Friday 12 February 2016 at a central Munich venue.  Details will be circulated nearer the time.

Any Brother wishing to attend this prestigious event should inform the  SSL Secretary: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , who will add the email address to the Circulation List.

  • 60 Years as a Mason

The Rose of Minden Regular meeting 5th March 2014

The VWBro Garrett O'Sullivan celebrates being a Mason on the 13th March 2014 and we will recognise this event at our regular meeting on the 5th March 2014. It will be some what of a surprise evening for him, I know I am safe saying this here as he does not read these articles!!

Brother Garrett was initiated into The Tudor Lodge No 5994, by the Worshipful Master - WBro Eric A Ensell on the 13th March 1954, he later became Master of this Lodge on the 26th september 1964. He was initiated with his brother James and the two of them followed each through the degrees with Garrett installing his brother into the chair of the said lodge on the 25th September 1965.

VWBro Garrett is still a regular visitor to all lodges with GL BFG, he also attends many german Lodges within OWL region and travels at least once a year back to his old Masonic roots, unfortunately Tudor lodge went into darkness some two years ago.

I strongly encourage all Masons reading this article to attend our regular meeting on the 5th March where we will celebrate his Sixty years, as a Mason. He took the chair at our last meeting to initiate his Grandson into Masonry and I am sure he will assist in years to come to put his Grandson into the Masters Chair in our Lodge.

  • Grand Lodge Seminar in Bad Iburg

As is widely known, there is no such thing as a free lunch. However, for a small investment of your time, a free lunch will be provided!

On 30th August starting at 10.00, the Grand Lodge will host a seminar that will be aimed to support the positions of Lodge Treasurers and Directors of Ceremony within a lodge.

The program for the day will start with the  Directors of Ceremonies at 10.00 am  which will be chaired by the Assistant Grand Master and he will be assisted by the Grand Wardens.

The purpose of the DofC's Seminar, is to look at Emulation Ritual and to answer any questions about what may be right or wrong to help iron our any irregularities within lodges,
This will be followed by lunch (the best bit of the day) at about 12.00.

The seminar for Treasurers which will be chaired by Peter Appleson, will start at 13.00.

The aim of this part of the seminar is to allow Treasurers to discuss the ins and outs of finances in an organisation. In no way at all, is the aim to tell our Private  Lodges how to keep their books. Our aim is to just assist when and  where required.

This is an initial notice and a full registration pack will follow in a few weeks' time. Nonetheless, please put this date in your diaries - and please kindly inform the Brethren of your lodge about this. Lastly, please note that this is open to all brethren and not just the Treasurers and DoC's - the more the merrier and everyone is welcome.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Grand Secretary!
